The SUP (Single Use Plastics) Directive, introduced in 2019, poses a number of challenges for manufacturers of plastic utensils and cutlery, but also opens up new opportunities. The directive aims to reduce the negative impact of single-use plastic on the environment.
New regulations from January 1, 2024
As of January 1, 2024, further restrictions on the use of single-use plastic are in effect. A fee has been introduced for single-use plastic containers and cups. The rates have been set in a regulation, and from January 1, 2024, businesses will charge consumers respectively: 20 gr for beverage cups and lids, and 25 gr for food packaging.
In addition, it has been banned, among other things:
- sales of food packaging made of expanded polystyrene (EPS)
- using food containers made of expanded polystyrene (EPS)
- making disposable plastic cutlery such as forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks and straws available at food service outlets
Challenges for manufacturers
The introduction of new regulations is forcing manufacturers of plastic utensils and cutlery to further change their business profile. It is necessary to continue developing and implementing new solutions that comply with the new regulations.
Opportunities for manufacturers
The SUP Directive can also be an opportunity for those manufacturers who can adapt quickly. There is great potential in the market for reusable and biodegradable products.
